Status of Maize Sowing in Bihar
With the steady increase in area, production and productivity in Maize, especially during Rabi Season, Bihar has made its place in the list of top Maize producing states. During 2013-14, the Rabi maize in Bihar has occupied about 4.60 lakh ha area and registered about 14 lakh MT with the average yield of 3053 kg/ha while Kharif maize has registered about 6.14 lakh MT from about 2.92 lakh ha with the average yield of 2103 kg/ha during the same period. This trend indicates wide adoption of improved and hybrid varieties of maize in Rabi season by farmers. Some other ecological aspects also contribute in making Rabi season more preferable season for maize in Bihar such as Maize is a susceptible crop to both access or less water, which usually happens during kharif season and low incidences of diseases and pests and slow growth of weeds in Rabi Season. Sowing of the maize has started in the state from mid-October. Presently, average day temperature is ranging around 29oC and average night temperature is around 15oC which is expected drop a little bit by the end of this month. In this report, we have tried to collate information of Maize sowing in several districts of Bihar.
In Purnia, maize sowing has commenced from mid-October. Mostly, farmers are sowing hybrid varieties of Dupont Pioneer and Monsanto. Day temperature in the district is around 29oC while minimum temperature is around 15oC. A few degrees drop is expected in the temperatures by the end of this month. The district has not received any significant rainfall from last one month and during next the seven days no rainfall is expected.
In Katihar, farmers have started sowing of maize from the second week of November mostly with hybrid varieties. Presently, max temperature is around 29oC while night temperature is ranging around 15oC. During next seven days, no rainfall is expected, but temperature is likely to cool down a few degrees by the end of this month.
In Khagaria, maize sowing has started from mid-October. Hybrid varieties like P-3522, P3533 are most popular among farmers. Day temperature in the district is ranging around 29oC and night temperature is around 15oC. We are expecting a little drop in the temperatures by the end of this month. The district has not received any significant rainfall from last one month. As per meteogram, no rainfall is expected during next seven days.
In Begusarai, sowing of maize has started from the first week of November. Farmers are preferring hybrids alongwith some local varieties. Presently, the max temperature is around 29oC while minimum temperature is around 15oC. A few degrees fall is expected in the temperature by the end of this month. There has been no rainfall from last one month. The meteogram generated through metGIS suggest no rainfall during next seven days.
In Vaishali, maize sowing has started from the first week of November. Mostly, hybrid varieties are being preferred by farmers. Currently, day temperature is around 30oC and minimum temperature is around 17oC. By the end of this month, some drop in the temperature is expected. The district has not received any significant rainfall from last 15 days. As per meteogram, no rainfall is likely during next seven days.
