Mustard Sowing Begins in Rajasthan

On the onset of Rabi Season, farmers are planning to start sowing of Mustard. Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat are major growers of Mustard in the country. According to Solvent Extractors’ Association of India, during 2014-15 Rabi Season, area under cultivation of Mustard was 65.17 lakh ha in the country which was 8.62% less than 2013-14. As per the SEA, in 2014-15, total acreage in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat was reduced 13.40%, 18.55% and 31.56% respectively as compared to 2013-14 season. Only Uttar Pradesh has registered a growth of 7% in total acreage. Delayed and deficient Monsoon, delayed harvesting of Kharif crops and high temperature during sowing period were the major reasons behind the decline of Mustard acreage during last year.  Higher price for other commodities like Barley had also compelled farmers to shift.  This year also Monsoon has been deficient and presently above 30oC temperatures are persisting in major Mustard growing areas.  It will be interesting to observe impact of higher temperature on Mustard cultivation during this season.

We at WeatherSys monitor crop growth vis-à-vis the actual weather and weather forecast on day to day basis. In this report, we have collected ground information on status of Mustard in major growing districts of Rajasthan.

In Hanumangarh, despite higher temperature, farmers have started sowing Mustard. Varieties like Chaudhary, Nandini, 9018 & other hybrid varieties are being sown. It is expected that about 60% sowing will be completed by the end of October.  Now, there is a requirement of good rainfall which will not only provide necessary moisture to the soil but also lower the temperature. There has been no rainfall from last 15 days. During next seven days, no rainfall is likely over the district and weather is likely to be hot and dry.

In Alwar, Mustard sowing has started from the second week of October. Varieties like DMH-4 are being preferred by the farmers. Farmers are planning to complete the sowing by end of this month.  Day temperature is high while morning and evening temperatures are cool in this area.  No rainfall is expected during next seven days and day temperatures are likely to remain above 30oC.

In Jaipur, farmers are waiting for cooler temperature and a good rainfall for soil moisture which will be ideal condition for Mustard sowing. Farmers may choose Bio-902 or local varieties for sowing. WeatherSys predicts no rainfall during next seven days and day temperatures are expected to come down after 8-10 days.

In Bharatpur, sowing of Mustard has started from second week of October. Farmers are preferring hybrid varieties like 19, 42 Girija 31 etc. As the temperatures are still above 30oC, farmers are irrigating their fields to maintain soil moisture and soil temperature. They did not wait for favourable conditions as it would be late for sowing. WeatherSys predicts no rainfall during next seven days and day temperatures are likely to remain above 30oC.
Meteogram produced by metGIS_Agro® showing actual weather data for last 10 days and forecast for next 7 days including soil temperature and ET. Rainfall for last 120 days is also available if clicked with specific crop.
