Wheat Yield May Affected Due to Above Normal Temperature in Punjab

The yield of the late sown wheat in Punjab and adjoining Haryana would be affected due to 2 to 5o above the normal temperature recently. The yield of the wheat crop may be affected as the crop is in kernel development stage and higher temperature would resulted into ripening before the grain develops weight. During next seven days, light to moderate shower is expected in the state which could halt the rising temperature for some time. Farmers are expecting to commence the harvesting of the crop from mid-April in most of the places of the state. In this report, we have collated the ground information, analysis carried out by our metGIS® for wheat and prevailing weather conditions in several districts of Punjab.
In Amritsar, the cumulative growth index of wheat is 1752 when sown during 45th week of the year. This index indicates kernel formation of the crop.  As per the ground information, there are some incidences of insect aphids for which farmers are using insecticides. No rainfall is required at this stage, as per the farmers. Currently, the maximum temperature is hovering around 26oC and minimum temperature is around 10oC (about 2o higher to normal temperature).   During next seven days, light to moderate rainfall is expected in the district.
In Bhatinda, the cumulative growth index of wheat is 1431 considering the sowing during 48th week of the year.  As per the growth index, the crop is at flowering to kernel formation stage.  Some incidences of insect black tilla has been reported in the district for which farmers applying insecticides. Currently, the day temperature is ranging around 28oC and night temperature is around 13oC. Light rainfall is likely over the district during next seven days.

In Ludhiana, wheat crop is at kernel formation according to the cumulative growth index of 1931 when the crop was sown during 45th week of the year. As per the field information, incidences of yellow rust has been observed at some places. Farmers are applying fungicides like Propiconazole to control it. The crop has been irrigated at least 3 times. Presently, maximum temperature is settling around 29oC and minimum temperature is around 15oC (around 4o above normal). During next seven days, light rainfall would occur over the district.
In Patiala, considering the sowing period during 45th week of the year, the cumulative growth index of wheat is 1973 which indicates kernel formation of the crop.  Fungus disease of yellow rust and insect like aphids has been reported at several places in the district. Farmers are using fungicides and insecticides to control these disease and pests. Currently, the max temperature is ranging around 30oC and minimum temperature is around 16oC (about 4o above normal). Light to moderate rainfall is expected in the district during next seven days.
