Low Wheat Production Likely in Gujarat

Wheat production in Gujarat is likely to hit due to a decline of nearly 21 percent (about 2.5 lakh ha) in wheat acreage as compared to last year and dry winter (DOA, Govt. of Gujrat). Till 1st February, wheat has been sown in about 8.8 lakh ha irrigated area and in about 19 thousand ha unirrigated area while last year it was 10.7 lakh ha and 71 thousand ha respectively. Wheat has been sown in more than 50 thousand ha in districts namely Ahmedabad, Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, Mehsana, Aravalli, Anand and Kheda. In this report we have collated the field information, analysis carried out by ‘metGIS®’ for wheat crop and current weather conditions in several districts of Gujarat.

In Ahmedabad, about 1.27 lakh ha area has been under wheat cultivation till the first week of February. The cumulative growth index of wheat in the district is 2159 when sowing was commenced during 44th week of the year. The growth index indicates heading and flowering stage of the crop.  As per the ground information, the crop has been irrigated at least three times out of 5 to 6 irrigation in crop cycle. The relative humidity during the growth period has been between 56 and 80%. Currently, the maximum temperature is ranging around 30oC and minimum temperature is around 13oC. As per the Weather Sys, the district has not received any significant rainfall from last three months and no rainfall is expected over the district during next seven days.

In Banaskantha, nearly 81.5 thousand ha has been sown with wheat this year as of now. The cumulative growth index of wheat is 1543 when sown during 45th week of the year. The growth index indicates that the crop is at flowering stage. As per the field information, the crop, no major incidence of pest or disease has been observed as of now.  The RH during the growth period has been between 66 and 78%. Currently, maximum temperature is hovering around 29oC and minimum temperature is settling at around 12oC. During next seven days, no rainfall is expected in the district.

In Kheda, wheat has been sown in about 53 thousand ha.  Considering the sowing during 44th week of the year, the cumulative growth index of wheat is 2357 in this district which indicates 50 percent flowering of the crop.  Farmers are using their own irrigation sources. The relative humidity has been between 57 and 79% during the growth period. Currently, the day temperature is around 30oC and night temperature is around 14oC. WeatherSys predicts no rainfall in the district during next seven days.

In Sabarkantha, the wheat acreage has reached about 84.5 thousand ha area recently. The cumulative growth index of wheat is 2193 in the district when sowing was started during 44th week of the year. According to growth index, the crop has attained flowering stage.  As per the farmers, no incidence of pest or disease has been observed as of now. The RH during the growth period has been between 63 to 80 percent. The maximum temperature in the district is ranging around 28oC and minimum temperature is around 12oC. There has been no significant rainfall during the entire Rabi season. No rainfall is expected in the district during next seven days and weather is likely to remain warm and dry.
