AP to Witness Improved Chickpea Yield in 2015-16 over the Last Year

We at WeatherSys have analyzed Chickpea production prospect during 2015-16 in Andhra Pradesh. Weather conditions from sowing to date (Flowering and Pod Formation) indicate better yield prospect as compared to 2014-15. The Growth Indices in Kurnool, Anantpur, Kadapa, Prakasam and Guntur districts are better or similar to the respective figures of last year. Between now and until harvest, if there are no unseasonal events, AP farmers should benefit from higher yields.
In Kurnool, Chickpea has been sown in 1.99 lakh ha till 13th Jan this year which was 1.42 lakh ha during 2014-15 season.  Considering the sowing during 45th week of the year, the growth index of Chickpea is 659 after 50% flowering stage of the crop. As seen in below figure, the GDD during this season is higher than the last year. Current maximum temperature is hovering around 29oC and minimum temperature is around 21oC. No rainfall would occur over the district during next seven days.
In Anantpur, Chickpea acreage has reached 75 thousand ha till 13th Jan which was 66.7 thousand ha last year. After 50% flowering, Chickpea growth index is 542 when sown during 45th week of the year. As per the growth index, the crop growth is good. The cumulative rainfall from June 2015 to Jan 2016 has been normal. Currently, max temperature is ranging around 32oC and min temperature is around 19oC.  No rainfall is expected during next seven days.

In Kadapa, about 77.56 thousand ha area has been covered under the Chickpea sowing which was 66.42 thousand ha during last Rabi season. Considering the sowing during 45th week of the year, the growth index of Chickpea is 533 after 50% flowering. The district has received about 775 mm cumulative rainfall from 01.06.15 to 13.01.16 which falls under excess category. At present, the max temperature is settling around 29oC and min temperature is around 22oC. During next seven days, no rainfall is expected in the district.

In Prakasham, Chickpea sowing has been completed in 82.43 thousand ha which was 50.23 thousand ha last season. After 50% flowering in Chickpea, the growth index is 587 when sown during 45th week of the year. As per the growth index, the crop growth is good. The cumulative rainfall (June 2015 to January 2016) in the district has been deficient by 25 percent. Currently, the max temperature is hovering around 29oC and min temperature is around 21oC.  During next seven days, no rainfall is likely to occur over the district and weather is expected to remain warm and dry.
In Guntur, Chickpea acreage has reached 13 thousand ha which was about 5 thousand ha during last Rabi season.  Considering the sowing during 45th week of the year, the growth index of Chickpea is 627 after 50% flowering in the crop. The district has received 622 mm rainfall which falls under normal category. Presently, the maximum temperature is hovering around 30oC and minimum temperature is ranging around 20oC.  During next seven days, no rainfall is expected.
