Wheat in Rajasthan : A Status Update

Rajasthan contributes about 9 percent of area and production of wheat in India with average yield of 3175 kg/ha (GOI, 2015). According to state government, till 17th December wheat has been sown in about 25.68 lakh ha area which is 80 percent of targeted 32 lakh ha area for this season. During last Rabi season, 33.18 lakh ha area was under wheat cultivation in the state. Relatively warmer winter this year has not only impacted the acreage of the crop but the prospect of yield are also depressed as higher temperature could lead to early maturity of the crop. The weather has also been unusually dry and crop in rainfed-area is expected to be adversely affected due to moisture stress. No significant rainfall is expected during next week.
