Mustard in Uttar Pradesh : A Status Update

With approximate 18 percent of total mustard area in India, Uttar Pradesh ranks 2nd after Rajasthan among Mustard growing states. During this Rabi season, mustard has been sown in about 10.93 lakh ha area in the state till 23rd December 2015 (The Solvent Extractors’ Association of India). As compared to last season, it is about 50 thousand ha lower which is mainly attributed to warmer winter and moisture stress. Post-monsoon rainfall in Western UP has been 79 percent less than normal rainfall while in East UP it is 72 percent less.   In this report, we have gathered ground information and collated this information with current weather conditions in several districts in Uttar Pradesh. 

In Mainpuri, the growth index of Mustard 2038 when sown during 40th week of the year.  As per the field information, mustard crop is of two months and is in flowering stage and in some fields pod formation has also started.  Recently, insects has been noticed on the crop in some places and farmers are using insecticides to control it. At present, the max temperature is around 24oC and min temperature is around 9oC. The district has not witnessed any significant rainfall from last one month. No rainfall is expected during next seven days and weather is likely to remain cool and dry. 

In Etah, Mustard sown during 44th week of the year has the growth index of 1280 which indicates good crop growth. As per the field information, mustard crop in pod formation stage and farmers are expecting to start harvesting from January end. No disease or pest has been reported as of now.  Currently, the day temperature is settling around 24oC and minimum temperature is hovering around 9oC and these temperatures are 2-3 degree higher than normal temperature. The district has not received any significant rainfall from last one month except very light rainfall on 1st January. During next seven days, no significant rainfall is expected in the district.  

In Bulandshahar, the growth index of mustard is 1224 considering the sowing period as 44th week of the year. As per the field information, mustard crop is almost two months old now and is mostly in pod formation stage. No incidence of disease or pest has been reported till date. Presently, maximum temperature is around 24oC and minimum temperature is around 10oC which are 4-5 degree higher than normal temperature. The district has received very light rainfall yesterday and very light rainfall is expected during middle of next week and rest of the days of the week weather will be cool and dry.  

In Aligarh, Mustard growth index calculated by metGIS is 1268 when sown during 44th week of the year. The crop is in pod formation stage and in good state as of now. There has been no incidence of pest and disease has been reported till date. The current maximum temperature is settling around 25oC and minimum temperature is around 13oC. The max temperature is about 5 degree and min temperature is about 8 degree higher than normal temperature in the district. There has been no significant rainfall from last two months. During next seven days, no significant rainfall is expected.  

In Fatehpur, the growth index of mustard is 1329 considering the sowing period as 44th week of the year. As per the ground information, the crop is of two months now and is in flowering stage. The crop is good as of now and no incidence of pest or disease has been reported. Currently, the day temperature is hovering around 25oC and night temperature is around 8oC. The district has not received any significant rainfall from last one month. No rainfall is expected during next seven days.
