Mustard in Gujarat : A Status Update

In this Rabi season, Mustard has been sown in 1.85 lakh ha area which is almost similar to last year’s acreage (DOA, Govt. of Gujarat). This defies the speculations of low mustard acreage in the state due to higher temperature and soil moisture stress. However, the yield loss due to warmer winter cannot be denied. Farmers are irrigating their crops with canals, borewells etc. In this report, we have collated the ground information, current weather and analysis carried out by our metGIS® software for several top mustard growing districts of Gujarat.

In Banaskantha, considering the sowing during 45th week of the year, the growth index of mustard is 1451 which indicates flowering stage of the crop. In the district, Mustard has been sown in 1.16 lakh ha which is currently about 6 thousand ha less than last year’s area sown with the crop.  Currently, the max temperature is ranging around 28oC and min temperature is around 13oC.  There has been no significant rainfall from last two months. WeatherSys predicts light rainfall on 18th January during next seven days.

In Patan, the growth index of mustard is 1450 when sown during 45th week of the year. It indicates that the crops is in flowering stage. During this season, mustard has been sown in about 29 thousand ha area. Presently, the day temperature is hovering around 30oC and night temperature is around 14oC. The district has not witnessed any significant rainfall from last two months. During next seven days, no rainfall is expected and weather is likely to remain cool and dry on a clear sky.

In Mahesana, considering the sowing during 45th week of the year, the growth index of mustard is 1426 which depicts flowering stage of the crop.  Mustard has been sown in about 21 thousand ha area till 11th January. Currently, the maximum temperature is ranging around 30oC and minimum temperature is around 14oC. There has been no rainfall in the district from last two months.  No rainfall is expected during next seven days.

In Sabarkantha, Mustard growth index is 1442 when sown during 45th week of the year. As per the growth index, the crop is in flowering stage.  About 1.7 thousand ha area has been sown with mustard till 11th January. Presently, the day temperature is settling around 28oC and night temperature is hovering around 14oC.  The district has not received any significant rainfall from last two months. As per the meteogram, light rainfall is expected on 18th January during next seven days and weather is likely to be cool and dry during the entire week.

In Anand, the growth index of mustard is 1505 when sowing was started from 45th week of the year and according to it the crop is in flowering stage. The area covered under the mustard in the district has reached 1.4 thousand ha till 11th January. The current maximum temperature in the district is around 30oC and minimum temperature is hovering around 14oC. The district has not received from last two months. During next seven days, no rainfall is expected in the district and weather is likely to remain cool and dry.
