Increased Chickpea Acreage in Maharashtra

Chickpea acreage in Maharashtra has increased this season. For this Rabi season, the target area under chickpea was set to 12.32 lakh ha whereas the total area sown till 9th January has reached 14.02 lakh ha which was 10.66 lakh ha during 2014-15. However, the increased acreage may not resulted into increased production due to unfavorable weather conditions during the crop growth period. In this report, we have collated the ground information, current weather and analysis carried out by our metGIS® software for several districts of Maharashtra.

In Amravati, the growth index of chickpea is 2286 when sown during 43rd week of the year.  As per ground information, flowering has started in the crop and no incidence of pest and diseases has been reported. Chickpea has been sown in about 94 thousand ha area till 9th January. Currently, day temperature is around 30oC and night temperature is around 17oC. There has been no significant rainfall from last 15 days and no rainfall is expected in the district during next seven days.

In Akola, considering the sowing period during 45th week of the year, the growth index of chickpea is 2286 which indicates good crop growth.  As per the field information, relatively higher temperature is prevailing in the district and farmers are using their irrigation sources. Presently, nearly 53 thousand ha area has been covered under chickpea in the district. Currently, max temperature is hovering around 31oC and min temperature is around 17oC. There has been no rainfall from last one month. During next seven days, no rainfall is expected.

In Buldhana, the growth index of chickpea is 2275 when sown during 46th week of the year.  Chickpea acreage in the district has reached 1lakh ha recently. As per the ground information, some farmers would start harvesting within next 15 days who have sown early. Farmers are contemplating lesser production as compared to last season.  Presently, the maximum temperature is ranging around 31oC and minimum temperature is around 15oC. The district has not received any significant rainfall from last one month. As per meteogram, no rainfall is likely during next seven days and weather is expected to remain cool and dry.

In Ahmednagar, chickpea growth index is 2193 when sown during 46th week of the year.  About 85 thousand ha area has been sown with chickpea this season.  As per the field information, the crop is at maturity stage and not good due to moisture stress and farmers are likely to suffer losses. Currently, the day temperature is around 30oC and night temperature is around 15oC. There has been no significant rainfall from last one month.
