Higher Temperatures Leading to Early Maturity in Wheat in Bihar

With about 7.24 percent to All India Wheat area, Bihar contributes about 5.30 percent to All India wheat production during 2013-14(GOI). Most of the wheat area of the state is in the Northern Bihar plains. Due to moisture stress and warmer winters, farmers are irrigating their fields more than normal irrigation. As per the analysis carried out by our metGIS® Software, due to warmer winter the wheat is encountering early maturity. This may resulted into yield loss. In this report, we have collated the ground information and weather conditions of several districts of Bihar.

In Rohtas, considering the sowing period as 45th week of the year, the wheat crop growth index is 1205 which indicates flowering stage of the crop. As seen in below figure, the growth index of wheat during current season is higher compared to the growth index of last year. This season, as per ground information, farmers have faced problem related to availability of quality inputs especially seeds. As there has been no significant rainfall from last three months, farmers are using their irrigation sources. Presently, maximum temperature is hovering around 27oC and minimum temperature is around 12oC. WeatherSys predicts very light rainfall on 16th Jan and weather is likely to remain mostly cool and dry during the next week.

In Muzaffarnagar, the growth index of wheat is 1209 when sown during 45th week of the year. It illustrates good crop growth which is at flowering stage as of now. When compared to last year’s growth index, it is observed that the current GDDs are significantly higher. Farmers are also contemplating low production due to high temperature than normal. Currently, the day temperature is ranging around 23oC and night temperature is around 10oC. During next seven days, no rainfall is expected.

In West Champaran, considering the sowing period on 45th week of the year, the growth index of wheat is 1176 which depicts the crop in flowering stage. This season the growth index is relatively higher than the last year’s growth index. Farmers of the district have preferred varieties like DBW-343, PBW-502, PBW-373 etc. Farmers are using their irrigation sources to irrigate their crop. Currently, the max temperature is around 24oC and min temperature is settling around 10oC. No rainfall is expected in the district during next seven days.

In Buxar, the growth index of wheat is 1211 which indicates good crop growth when sown during 45th week of the year. As per the ground information, the soil moisture is very low and due to this farmers have irrigated their crop 3 times after sowing instead of two times. Currently, the day temperature is around 25oC and night temperature is around 12oC. As per the meteogram, no rainfall is expected in the district and weather is likely to remain cool and dry.
