Castor Crop Status in Gujarat

Gujarat is the major castor producing state in India.  During 2015-16 Kharif season, castor has been sown in 7.84 lakh ha in the state which was higher by 6 percent compared to Kharif season of 2014-15. With estimated average yield of 2024 kg/ha, about 14.86 lakh MT production has been estimated by state government for the year 2014-15. In this report, we have collated the information produced by metGIS and field level information from several districts of Gujarat. 
In Banaskantha, about 1.40 lakh ha area has been sown with castor during 2015-16 kharif season. Castor is in harvesting stage. As per the ground information, the production is expected to be lower than last year production. Currently, day temperature is ranging around 28oC while night temperature is hovering around 12oC. There has been no significant rainfall from last two months. WeatherSys predicts no rainfall during next seven days and weather is likely to remain mostly cool and dry. 
In Kutch, harvesting of castor has started recently and it is expected to be completed by mid-January. Castor has been sown in about 1.19 lakh ha area in the district. Organic farming of castor is also being adopted by the farmers of the district and they are expecting higher production this time. Presently, the max temperature is around 28oC and min temperature is around 14oC. There has been no rainfall from last two months and no rainfall is expected during next seven days. 

In Surendranagar, castor has been sown in about 0.77 lakh ha area this year. Castor is majorly cultivated as an intercrop with cotton and groundnut to mitigate some pests. At present, the day temperature is ranging around 30oC and night temperature is around 16oC. The district has not witnessed any significant rainfall from at least last two months. As per meteogram, no rainfall is expected during next seven days and weather is likely to be cool and dry on a clear sky. 

In Ahmedabad, area under the castor has been about 0.58 lakh ha during this kharif season.  As per the ground information, farmers have commenced harvesting of the crop and they are contemplating a drop in the production. Presently, the maximum temperature is around 32oC and night temperature is hovering around 14oC which are 2 to 4 degree higher than normal temperature. There has been no significant rainfall from at least last two months. During next seven days, no rainfall is likely over the district. 
In Vadodara, castor has been sown in about 0.33 lakh ha this year.  As per the field information, harvesting of castor has started and farmers are expecting to complete the harvesting by the mid-January. The day temperature is ranging around 33oC and night temperature is around 15oC which is few degrees higher than normal temperature.  There has been no rainfall from last two months. In the district, no significant rainfall is expected during next seven days.
