Status Update: Chickpea in Uttar Pradesh

The growth index of Chickpea in UP indicates that crop is doing well so far in irrigated area. However, the dry season will affect the crop in rainfed areas. The crop is likely to grow normally in irrigated areas. The crop is at flowering stage where the sowing was done during 42 to 43 weeks of the year.

In Fatehpur, the growth index of 1371 indicates flowering stage if the sowing was done in 42nd week. The ground information suggests that the sowing was started during mid-November. Thus, the actual crop would be in vegetative stage. The day temperatures in the district are around 23oC and minimum temperature are around 7oC.  During next seven days, no rainfall is expected.

In Jhansi, the growth index of 1303 depicts flowering stage of chickpea crop provided sowing was done during 42-44th week. However, as per the field level information, most of the farmers have commenced sowing from second week of November. Currently, maximum temperatures in the district are ranging around 23oC and minimum temperature are around 8oC. WeatherSys predicts no rainfall during next seven days.

In Kanpur, the growth index of 1413 suggests good crop growth considering 42nd week as sowing period. As per the field information, sowing of chickpea was started during November-beginning in irrigated area. Presently, the day temperatures are around 23oC in the district while night temperature are around 6oC. No rainfall is expected during next seven days.
