Status of Wheat in Punjab

After a sluggish beginning, due to late harvesting of kharif crops, scanty rainfall and relatively higher temperature, the wheat sowing is almost completed in the Punjab. Wheat acreage is expected to be around 35 lakh ha almost similar to last year. Presently, conducive weather conditions prevails for wheat crop in most parts of the state. We at WeatherSys monitor crop growth vis-à-vis the actual weather and weather forecast on day to day basis and arrive at a ‘growth index’ district wise. In this report, we have collated information on Wheat growth in several districts of Punjab.
In Amritsar, the growth index of wheat crop sown during 45th Week of the year was 787 on 14th December which indicates that wheat crop is at vegetative stage. According to field information, many farmers in several districts had sown late. Presently, average day temperature is around 20oC and night temperature is around 3oC. The relative humidity is between 70 to 76%. WeatherSys predicts no rainfall during next seven days.

In Bhatinda, the growth index of 432 indicates that the crop is at germination stage where sowing has been done during last week of November. According to the ground information, the crop is at vegetative stage. Presently, day temperature is around 21oC and night temperature is between 5oC. The relative humidity is ranging between 70 to 72%. During next seven days, no rainfall is expected.

In Ludhiana, the growth index of 949 of wheat in the district indicates flower initiation stage of the crop when sown during 45th Week. According to the ground information, the crop is currently in vegetative stage. Presently, maximum temperature is ranging around 21oC and minimum temperature is between 7oC and the RH is ranging between 69 to 72%. There has been no significant rainfall since sowing started. No rainfall is likely during next seven days.

In Patiala, as per the growth index of 972, wheat crop is mostly in vegetative stage. Field level information also confirms the same state of the crop. Presently, day temperature is around 20oC and night temperature is around 6oC. The relative humidity is ranging between 70 to 74%. There has been no significant rainfall over the district since sowing commenced. During next seven days, weather will be partly cloudy but no rainfall is expected.
