Status of Mustard in Rajasthan



From last three seasons, declining trend in area and production of Mustard is being witnessed in Rajasthan. The estimated Mustard area during 2014-15 was 24.34 lakh ha which indicates sharp decline of more than 3 lakh ha from 27.82 lakh ha during 2013-14. The trend is likely to continue this year and Rajasthan may witness about 50 thousand ha decline in Mustard area as compared to last season as per Govt. sources. 

In Bharatpur, the growth index of 1689 for Mustard indicates starting of reproductive stage of the crop when considering beginning of sowing in 40th week of the year. The field level information also confirmed the stage of the crop. Presently, the maximum temperature is around 23oC and minimum temperature is around 8oC. As per WeatherSys, no significant rainfall is expected in the district during next seven days. 

In Kota, the mustard growth index of 1648 suggests the flowering stage of the crop. The field level information from farmers also confirms the good growth of the crop.  During 40th to 50th week, the relative humidity was from 69 to 74 percent. Presently, day temperature is ranging around 23oC and night temperature is around 9oC. As per meteogram, no significant rainfall is expected during next seven days. 

In Tonk, the growth index of 1667 for Mustard depicts good crop growth and the crop is at flowering stage considering 40th week as starting of sowing. However, from the field it is informed that the crop is at vegetative stage which was sown during 47th week onwards. Presently, 22oC max and 6oC min temperature prevails in the district. During next seven days, no rainfall is expected in the district.  

From the above, it is observed that despite moisture stress, the crop is doing well so far. Irrigation facility available to many farmers is also helpful.
