Low Turmeric Arrival This December

India is the largest producer of turmeric. The country has 2.33 lakh ha area under turmeric cultivation with a total annual production of 11.90 lakh MT during 2013-14 (NHB, 2015). It occupies about 7 percent of the total area under spices and condiments. The main turmeric producing states in India are Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, West Bengal, Odisha and Mizoram. The harvesting period is from January to June. As far as Arrival pattern concerned, turmeric is available in the markets throughout the year.

During December 2015 (till 23rd), total turmeric arrival was recorded 2276 mt and Erode (TN), Cuddapah(AP), Duggirala (AP), Ichapuram(AP) and Sangli (MH) have been top 5 mandis in respect of arrivals and which contributed about 1648 MT in total arrivals of current month. In these top 5 mandis, Ichapuram Mandi in Andhra Pradesh recorded lowest modal price of Rs 7200/qntl while Sangli in Maharashtra witnessed highest price of Rs 10250/qntl.

During November 2015, total turmeric arrival was recorded 2759 mt and Erode (TN), Cuddapah(AP), Duggirala(AP), Chamraj Nagar (KA) and Nizamabad (Telangana) have been top 5 mandis in respect of arrivals. These top 5 mandis contributed about 2140 MT in total arrivals during Nov’15. In these top 5 mandis, Duggirala Mandi in Andhra Pradesh recorded lowest modal price of Rs 8187/qntl while Cuddapah in Andhra Pradesh witnessed highest price of Rs 9176/qntl.

During December 2014, total turmeric arrival was recorded 9129 mt and Jangipur (WB), Erode (TN), Sangli (MH), Duggirala (AP) and Basmat (MH) were top 5 mandis in respect of arrivals. These top 5 mandis contributed about 7416 MT in total arrivals during December 2014. In these top 5 mandis, Jangipur Mandi in West Bengal recorded lowest modal price of Rs 5500/qntl during Dec’14 while Basmat in Maharashtra witnessed highest price of Rs 8500/qntl.

From the above, sharp decline is observed in arrivals during December 2015 as compared to December 2014. The effects of low arrivals have also been seen in the modal prices with some exceptions like Duggirala mandi during November 2015.
