Increased Chickpea Acreage in Maharashtra

Maharashtra is among top Chickpea producing states where normal area under Chickpea is more than 13 lakh ha. During this Rabi season, the state government has targeted 12.32 lakh ha under chickpea cultivation. Till December 5, Chickpea has been sown in about 10.94 lakh ha area which is 88.8% of targeted area.  During same period last season, 7.48 lakh ha area was covered under this important pulse crop. This indicates significant growth in Chickpea area in the state this year.   From October onwards, only Konkan division has received normal rainfall whereas other regions of the state, namely, Madhya Maharashtra received deficient rainfall (37 percent less) and Marathwada (74 percent less) and Vidarbha (90 percent less) received scanty rainfall. 

In Amravati Division, chickpea sowing has been completed in 2.63 lakh ha which is about 65 percent of targeted area of about 4 lakh ha till 5th December.  During the same period last year, the chickpea area was about 2.20 lakh ha. Presently, day temperature is ranging around 30oC and night temperature is around 13oC. No rainfall is expected during next seven days.

In Aurangabad Division, about 1.42 lakh ha have been sown with chickpea till 5th December which is about 142 percent of targeted area of about 1 lakh ha. About 88 thousand ha was sown with chickpea during same period last year.  Presently, maximum temperature is ranging around 30oC and minimum temperature is around 15oC. During next seven days, no rainfall is expected.

In Latur Division, sowing of chickpea has been completed in 3.75 lakh ha which is 166 percent greater than targeted area of 2.26 lakh ha. During same period last year, chickpea area was 2.20 lakh ha. Presently, day temperature is around 30oC and minimum temperature is around 13oC. As per meteogram, Light rainfall is expected over several districts of the division on 11th December.

In Nagpur Division, normal chickpea acreage is around 1.48 lakh ha while 1.51 lakh ha is targeted for this season. Presently, about 65 percent of targeted area i.e. 98.51 thousand ha has been sown with chickpea. Temperature is ranging around 30oC while night temperature is around 10oC. Light rainfall is expected in Chandrapur district during next seven days.

In Nasik Division, chickpea sowing has been done in about 43 thousand ha which is about 39 percent of targeted area of 1.11 lakh ha. During same period last year, only 19.7 thousand ha was sown with chickpea. Presently, temperature is around 31oC while minimum temperature is around 14oC. As per meteogram, no rainfall is expected during next seven days.

In Pune Division, about 1.26 lakh ha area has been sown with chickpea achieving about 76 percent of targeted area of about 1.66 lakh ha. During same period last year, 1.01 lakh ha area was under chickpea cultivation. Currently, day temperature is ranging around 31oC and night temperature is around 15oC. WeatherSys predicts light rainfall on 11th in Solapur district while most of the parts of the division will be dry during next seven days.
