Higher Coffee Production Forecasts For Karnataka

The productivity of Coffee is adversely affected by high temperature alongwith extreme and unseasonal rainfall and frequency of pest and disease infestations. Arabica variety typically grown in cool, moisture-rich and subtropical weather conditions. As compared to Arabica, Robusta variety have better yield and take lesser time to bear fruit. Also, Robusta can better withstand the onslaught of harsh weather as well as plant pests. Despite rainfall at regular intervals currently, temperature in Karnataka are ranging around 30oC. As per WeatherSys, light to moderate rainfall is expected in many parts of the state during next seven days.

Among Coffee growing states, Karnataka holds top position.  Chikmangalur, Kodagu and Hassan are major district for coffee cultivation in the state. During 2014-15, about 2.33 lakh MT total Coffee production has been estimated in the state from which 74.75 thousand MT is Arabica while 1.58 lakh MT is Robusta variety.  Presently, harvesting of Coffee berries is under progress. The Coffee Board’s post blossom production forecast for 2015-16 gives a positive outlook in which about 2.56 lakh MT production is expected in the state which is about 10 percent higher than estimate for last year.
