All India Wheat Prospect

Overall wheat prospect in India looks progressing as of date despite reports of poor soil moisture. In fact, overall rainfall in wheat growing areas had been adequate during kharif. Because of relatively high temperature in north India during late October and early November, sowing was delayed smartly by farmers. Once sown, the crop is progressing well.

We at WeatherSys monitor crop growth vis-à-vis the actual weather and weather forecast on day to day basis and arrive at a ‘growth index’ district wise. We also gather ground information on the status of the crop in major growing districts.

In this report, we have collated information on Wheat growth in states of Gujarat, Haryana, MP, Punjab and UP.

In Gujarat, the growth index of wheat crop sown during 44th Week of the year in Anand and Kheda districts is 1214 which indicates healthy wheat crop. Flowering initiation has started.  Till 7th December 12.31 lakh ha area has been covered under wheat sowing (Dept. of Agriculture, Govt. of Gujarat). According to field information, many farmers in several districts had sown late. Presently, average day temperature is between 25-30oC and night temperature is between 12-20oC. WeatherSys predicts no rainfall during next seven days.

In Haryana, the growth index indicates that the crop is flowering initiation stage where sowing has been done during last week of October and first week of November. Fatehabad and Karnal districts may witness good crop growth as growth index in these districts is around 950. According to the ground information, about 90 percent of farmers have completed wheat sowing. Presently, day temperature is between 21-25oC and night temperature is between 10-14oC. During next seven days, no rainfall is expected.

In Madhya Pradesh, the growth index indicates beginning of flower initiation in most of the districts. Dewas, Dhar, Indore and Harda are some of the districts where growth index is above 1050 due to timely sowing (44th Week). According to the ground information from Gwalior, wheat sowing started in late November is currently in germination stage. Presently, maximum temperature is ranging between 28-31oC and minimum temperature is between 14-18oC. No rainfall is likely during next seven days.
