Status of Black Pepper Arrivals
The ‘King of Spices’ Black pepper
is mostly grown in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Pondicherry and A&N
Islands. Kerala alone grows about 90 percent of Black Pepper. Tropical hot and
humid climatic conditions are most suitable for this crop. During 2013-14,
about 1.22 lakh ha area was estimated under Black Pepper cultivation and about
37000 mt production was estimated. Temperature ranging around 10oC
to 40oC and annual rainfall of about 200 mm are considered ideal for
its growth.
Black Pepper is also called Black
Gold for its importance in international trade. USA and Europe are major export
destinations of Indian black pepper. During 2013-14, total 21250 mt was
exported earning about Rs. 94002 lakh. About 28000 mt of value Rs. 161000 lakh
is targeted during 2015-16. In the first quarter, about 10750 mt has been
exported achieving 38 percent of target.
In Kerala, about 84 thousand ha
area was estimated under Black Pepper cultivation and production was estimated
20 thousand ha during 2013-14. Kannur, Kottayam, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam,
Kozhikode and Ernakulum are major producing districts. Presently, temperature
in the state is ranging around 30oC. During next seven days light to
moderate rainfall would occur in many parts of the state.
In Karnataka, Black Pepper area was
estimated about 27955 ha from which 16 thousand mt during 2013-14. Kodagu and
Uttar Kannada are major producing districts. Presently, temperature is around
29oC. Light to moderate rainfall is likely to occur during next
seven days.
During 1-23rd November
2015, Kanjangadu (Kerala), Gonikappal (Karnataka), Mangalore (Karnataka), Sultan
bathery (Kerala) and Moodigere (Karnataka) has been top 5 mandis registering
arrivals of 101, 64, 48, 44and 38 tonnes respectively (total arrivals 295 mts
in top 5 mandis) . During this period, Chikkamangalore
recorded lowest modal price of Rs 1600/qntl while Sultan bathery witnessed
highest price of Rs 69000/qntl.
While during the corresponding period in 2014, Kanjangadu (Kerala), Moodigere
(Karnataka), Gonikappal (Karnataka), Somvarpet
(Karnataka) and Kannur (Kerala) were top 5 mandis registering arrivals of 430, 223,
132, 55 and 25tonnes respectively (total arrivals 865 mts in top 5 mandis). Somvarpet had recorded lowest price of Rs 40000/qntl
for this period whereas highest price was Rs 65000/qntl recorded in Gonikappal
Mandi of Kerala.
