Sowing Status of Wheat in Gujarat

Gujarat is among top ten wheat producing states.  About 11.46 lakh ha area was under wheat cultivation during last Rabi Season.  The productivity of this Golden Grain has been more than 3000 kg/ha in the state.  Presently, temperature in the state is ranging between 32oC to 36oC while soil moisture is less than ideal requirement for wheat germination.  Temperatures are expected to cool down a few degrees by end of November. Sowing of wheat has not commenced fully in the State due to persisting high temperature. We at WeatherSys monitor crop growth vis-à-vis the actual weather and weather forecast on day to day basis. We also gather ground information on the status of the crop and associated weather in major growing districts.  In this report, we have collected ground information of Wheat sowing status in several districts of Gujarat. 

In Junagarh, sowing of wheat has started from first week of November. Farmers are mostly preferring varieties like GW496. Wheat acreage was about 74 thousand ha during 2014-15. Currently, the temperature in the district is around 36oC. There has been no rainfall from last 10 days and weather is expected to remain hot and dry during next seven days. 

In Rajkot, farmers are planning to commence wheat sowing from mid-November. Popular varieties in the district are Lok-1 and GW496. During last Rabi season, wheat acreage in the district was about 13 thousand ha. This season, some farmers may switch to other crops like Horsegram or Cumin due to less rainfall.  Presently, temperature is around 35oC. As per meteogram, no rainfall is expected during next seven days. In Sabarkantha, wheat sowing is expected to begin from mid-November.  Mostly, farmers in the district prefer GW496 and Lok-1. During 2014-15 season, about 82 thousand ha area was under wheat cultivation. Presently, weather is hot and temperature is ranging around 34oC. There has been no rainfall from last 10 days. In Banaskantha, wheat sowing is likely to start from mid-November. Varieties like GHT-933, Lok-1, GW496 and GW173 are popular among farmers. Last season, about 88 thousand ha area was under wheat cultivation in the district. Wheat sowing is delayed due to high temperatures in the district which are currently around 34oC.  As per meteogram, no rainfall is expected during next seven days and weather is likely to be hot and dry. 

In Ahmedabad, wheat sowing is likely to begin from mid-November. GW496 variety is widely popular among farmers in the district. During 2014-15, total wheat acreage was about 1.96 lakh ha from which about 1.41 was under irrigation conditions while 54.5 thousand ha was under rainfed conditions. Currently, temperature in the district are around 36oC. There has been no rainfall from last 10 days and hot and dry weather is expected during next seven days. 

In Mehsana, farmers are planning to start sowing of wheat during second week of November. During last season, about 66 thousand ha area was under wheat cultivation in the district.  Popular variety are like GW-496 in the district. As per meteogram, no rainfall is likely over the district during next seven days.

In Kheda, wheat sowing is expected to start during mid-November. Lok-1 and GW496 are among the popular varieties in the district. During 2014-15, wheat acreage was about 59 thousand ha. Presently, temperature in the district are ranging around 36oC. During next seven days, no rainfall is expected and weather is likely to be hot and dry.
