Higher Coffee Production Expected in 2015-16 in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu is third major Coffee growing state.  As per the Coffee Board of India, around 31 thousand ha area is under Coffee cultivation in Tamil Nadu.  Pulneys, Nilgiris, Salem and Coimbatore are major district for coffee cultivation in the state contributing about 12 thousand, 7.7 thousand, 9 thousand and 2.8 thousand ha area respectively. During 2014-15, about 17.9 thousand MT total Coffee production has been estimated in the state from which 13.15 thousand MT is Arabica while 4.72 thousand MT is Robusta variety.  Presently, harvesting of Coffee berries is under progress. Timely and adequate blossom and backing shower lead Board’s post blossom forecast for 2015-16 gives a positive outlook in which about 18.8 thousand MT production is expected in the state.  

The yield of Coffee is adversely affected by high temperature alongwith extreme and unseasonal rainfall and frequency of pest and disease infestations. Despite rainfall at regular intervals currently, temperature in the state are ranging around 30oC.
