Higher Chickpea Acreage Expected in Karnataka

With the steady increase in chickpea acreage, Karnataka is becoming one of the major chickpea growing states in India. During 2013-14, the state has registered about 7.16 lakh mt production from 9.46 lakh ha area with average yield of 757 kg/ha. Reportedly, the state has targeted about 13.51 lakh ha area under Chickpea cultivation during current Rabi season. High yielding short duration varieties like ICCV 37, JAKI 9218, JG 63, JG 11, MNK 1 and Phule G 0517 are popular among farmers in Karnataka. In the northern part of the state which is main chickpea growing belt, average day temperature is ranging around 30oC while average night temperature is around 21oC. We are expecting some drop in the temperature by the end of this month. In this report, we have tried to collate information of Chickpea sowing in several districts of Karnataka. 

In Bijapur, chickpea sowing has started from mid-October. High yielding and short duration varieties like JG-11 alongwith local varieties like Jawari are being sown. The district falls under Northern Dry Zone of the state which has not received sufficient post-monsoon rainfall. Day temperature is ranging around 31oC which is expected to cool down a few degrees by the end of this month while minimum temperature is around 22oC which is likely to remain same during this month. 

In Dharwad, chickpea sowing has started from November beginning. Farmers are preferring local varieties like Jawari. The district also comes under Northern Dry Zone of the state.  Presently, day temperature is around 29oC which is expected to drop a few degrees by the last week of November while night temperature is likely to remain around 18oC. As per meteogram, light rainfall is expected during 23rd November. 

In Bagalkot, farmers have commenced sowing of chickpea from mid-October.  Local varieties like Jawari are popular among farmers. In the district, less rainfall has received during this monsoon season. Presently, temperature is around 30oC and a few degrees fall is expected by the first week of December. As per meteogram, no rainfall is expected during next seven days. 

In Bellary, chickpea sowing has started from October. Mostly, varieties like yellow chickpea are being sown. Due to recent showers, the temperature in the district is around 26oC. As per meteogram, light rainfall is expected during next seven days and weather is likely to be cool and dry.

In Gadag, farmers has started chickpea sowing from October first week. Popular chickpea varieties are JG-11, Jaki 9218, etc. Presently temperature is ranging around 30oC which is expected to drop down little bit by the end of this month.  Night temperature is around 21oC. Light rainfall is expected on 23rd November and no rainfall is likely on rest of the days of the week and weather will remain cool and dry.
