Higher Cardamom Export Expected During 2015-16

Cardamom (Small) also known as Queen of the Spices is mostly grown in Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Western Ghats are most suitable area for commercial farming of Cardamom. About 69970 ha area under Cardamom cultivation and 18 thousand mt total production is estimated for 2014-15. Annual rainfall of 1500 mm to 4000 mm and temperature ranging from 10oC to 35oC are considered ideal for its growth.


Cardamom is a sought after spice in the Middle East. During 2013-14, about 2000 mt was exported to Saudi Arabia alone from total export of 3600 mt. For 2015-16, about 3500 mt worth Rs 2800 lakh is targeted. With about 975 mt export worth Rs. 9169 lakh, about 28 percent of quantity and 33 percent of value target has been achieved by first quarter of this year.

In Kerala, about 39730 ha is estimated under Cardamom cultivation and about 16 thousand mt is estimated during 2014-15.  Presently, harvesting is being done which will continue till February next year. Idukki, Palakkad (Palghat), Kozhikode and Kannur are the main producing districts. Presently, temperature is around 30oC in the state.

In Karnataka, Cardamom cultivation is estimated under about 25080 ha area from which 1000 mt production is estimated during 2014-15.  Hassan, Chikmagalur, Kodagu and Shimoga are major growing districts.  Presently, temperature is around 27oC. Light to moderate rainfall is expected during 28th November to 1st December.


In Tamil Nadu, total estimated area under cardamom is about 5160 ha from which 1000 mt production is estimated during 2014-15.  Major growing districts are Madurai, Salem, Coimbatore, Ramnathpuram, the Nilgiris and Tirunelveli. Currently, temperature is ranging around 30oC in the state. As per WeatherSys, light to moderate rainfall is expected during next seven days.
