Conducive Weather Prevails in Major Tea Growing Regions
Tea, the most consumed beverage after water, is mainly a tropical and sub-tropical plants. In India, Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu are top Tea producing states. During 2014-15, with production of 1,197.18 million kg, India ranked the second largest tea producer globally. About 564 thousand ha area is under tea cultivation in India. Weather alongwith other ecological elements plays vital role in tea cultivation. For better quality and higher yield, moderate temperature with humid climate is preferred. An ambient temperature ranging between 13oC to 30oC, well distributed moderate to heavy rainfall and well drained acidic soil with around 5 pH are considered conducive for good growth of tea plants.
In Assam, Tea cultivation is being done in about 304 thousand ha area. With the estimated production of about 427.68 million kg during Jan-Sept 2015, Assam alone has contributed 50 percent of total national production during this period. Presently, temperature in the state are ranging around 29oC. During this Monsoon season (June-Sept), the state registered about 1440 mm rainfall. As per meteogram generated by using metGIS, no rainfall is expected during next seven days.
In West Bengal, about 140 thousand ha area is under tea cultivation. During Jan-Sept 2015, about 230.38 million kg tea production has been estimated in Terai, Dooars and Darjeeling areas. The state has received normal rainfall (1407 mm) during June to September this year. Currently, temperature are ranging around 16oC in tea growing regions of the state. WeatherSys predicts no significant rainfall during next seven days and weather is likely to be partly cloudy.
In Tamil Nadu, tea is grown in about 70 thousand ha area. Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Madurai, Coimbatore and Nilgiris are main tea growing areas of the state from which about 125 million kg production has been estimated during Jan-Sept 2015. Presently, day temperature are around 30oC in the state. About 285 mm rainfall was registered in the state during June-September 2015. Currently, North East Monsoon is active over South India and as per meteogram, light to moderate rainfall is expected in many parts of the state during next seven days.
