Chickpea Sowing Status in Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh is among top states which grows pulses. Chickpea is one of the major pulse crop of the state grown in Rabi season. During 2014-15, about 5.96 lakh tonnes chickpea production was estimated from about 5.89 lakh ha area with 1013 kg/ha yield.  Presently, temperatures in the state are ranging around 32oC which are expected to cool down a few degrees by last week of November. Soil moisture is low in western part of the state while slightly better conditions are in central and eastern UP. We also gather ground information on the status of the crop and associated weather in major growing districts.  In this report, we have collected ground information of Chickpea sowing status in several districts of Uttar Pradesh. 

In Fatehpur, farmers are planning to commence sowing of chickpea from mid-November.  Both desi and kabuli varieties cultivated in the district and most popular varieties are Radhey, Annegiri-1 etc. Temperatures in the district are around 32oC.  During next seven days, no rainfall is expected and temperatures are likely to remain same. 

In Kanpur, chickpea sowing is likely to begin from second week of November.  Most popular varieties of chickpea are Pusa 362, Pusa 372, Gaurav, etc. Currently, temperatures in the district are ranging around 32oC and are expected to remain same during next seven days as WeatherSys predicts no rainfall during this period. 

In Jhansi, farmers, who have their own irrigation sources, started sowing of chickpea while many resource-poor farmers can shift to other crops like Bajra due to deficient rainfall during Monsoon. Now, temperatures are around 33oC in the district which are expected to remain same during next seven days.

In Lalitpur, resourceful farmers have started sowing of chickpea from mid-October while small and marginal farmer have started after light rainfall during October-end. Popular varieties in the district are KWR108, KGD-1168 etc. Presently, temperatures are around 31oC and are likely to drop few degrees by last week of November.
