Status of Chickpea Sowing in Maharashtra

Chickpea (Gram) cultivation in about 13 lakh ha normal area makes Maharashtra one of the largest producers of this important pulse crop.  However, for this Rabi Season target area under Chickpea is 12.32 lakh ha in Maharashtra.  Farmers in the state has started sowing of Chickpea. Presently, despite 30oC to 35oC day temperatures, good soil moisture conditions in most of the parts of the state is suitable for sowing of Chickpea and about 1.4% of targeted area has already been sown till 10th October 2015.

We also gather ground information on the status of the crop and associated weather in major growing districts.  In this report, we have collected ground information of Chickpea (Chana) sowing status in several districts of Maharashtra. 

In Nasik, sowing of Chickpea is expected to commence from last week of October. About 41 thousand ha normal area is under chickpea cultivation in the district while about 38 thousand ha is targeted for this season. Phule G-5 is a popular variety in the district. Presently day temperatures are between 30oC to 35oC in the district.  WeatherSys predicts no rainfall is likely over the district and weather is expected to be hot and dry during next seven days. 

In Jalgaon, Chickpea sowing is likely to start from November-beginning due to less rainfall and continued high temperature in the district.  Normal area under chickpea is about 50 thousand ha while targeted area during this season is about 35 thousand ha in the district. As per meteogram, weather is likely to remain hot and dry with clear sky during next seven days. 

In Pune, farmers are planning to start sowing of Chickpea from end of this month. Both Kabuli and Desi varieties are cultivated in the district. Temperature in the district is between 30oC and 35oC. Normal area under Chickpea cultivation is about 54 thousand ha while 50 thousand ha area is targeted for 2015-16 season. No rainfall is expected during next seven days and weather is likely to remain warm and dry. 

In Ahmednagar, sowing of Chickpea has commenced from first week of October. Popular varieties like Vijay is being sown by the farmers. About 98 thousand ha is normal area under chickpea cultivation in the district while for this season about 79 thousand ha is targeted. As per meteogram, no rainfall is likely over the district during next seven days and weather is expected to be hot and dry.  

In Amravati, farmers has started sowing of Chickpea from October-beginning. Varieties like Vijay, Vishal and Chickpea-220 are popular among farmers. Maximum temperature in the district is ranging between 30 to 35oC. As per meteogram generated by using metGIS_Agro, no rainfall is expected in the district during next seven days.

In Buldhana, sowing of Chickpea has started. Normal area under chickpea cultivation in the district is about 74 thousand ha while about 69 thousand ha is targeted for this season.  Popular varieties among farmers are Vijay, Vishal, etc. Weather in the district is expected to remain hot and dry during next seven days.
