Maharashtra Witnessing Low Cotton Production Due to Deficient Rainfall

Recent deep depression over Arabian Sea is likely to bring light to moderate rainfall over coastal and parts of Madhya Maharashtra during next 2-3 days.  Presently, Soybean and Cotton harvesting is being done in Maharashtra.  No major effect of this event is likely on both the crops as the System has already weakening. Major Cotton growing areas would not receive any rainfall. We at WeatherSys monitor crop growth vis-à-vis the actual weather and weather forecast on day to day basis. In this report, we have collected ground information on status of Soybean and Cotton crops in major growing districts of Maharashtra.

In Amravati, harvesting of Soybean and Cotton is in progress.  As per farmers, the production is expected to be low due to less rainfall in July (41% of Normal) and September (63% of Normal).  As per meteogram, no rainfall is expected in the district during next seven days.

In Akola, picking of Cotton is expected to start from next week onwards.  Farmers in the district are hoping for a good production in Cotton and low production in Soybean as compared to last year. There has been no rainfall from last 10 days.  WeatherSys predicts no rainfall during next seven days.

In Yavatmal, farmers have started Cotton harvesting and are expecting good harvest this season. Despite less Soybean acreage as compared to last year and deficient rainfall during the Monsoon season, its production is estimated to be higher than last year because of more than 400kg/ha increase in productivity. WeatherSys forecasts no rainfall during next seven days and weather is likely to be warm and dry with clear sky.

In Buldhana, due to less and erratic rainfall during June and July and pest infestation, Cotton and Soybean production is expected to be low.  The meteogram suggests no rainfall during next seven days and weather is likely to be warm and dry.

In Jalna, Cotton harvesting is being done and its production is expected to be low due to deficient rainfall. The meteogram suggest no rainfall during next seven days and weather is likely to be warm and dry.
Meteogram produced by metGIS_Agro ® showing actual weather data for last 10 days and forecast for next 7 days including soil temperature and ET. Rainfall for last 120 days is also available if clicked with specific crop. Live data for major crops/districts of India can be seen at: www.weatherindia.net
In Parbhani, picking of Cotton has started. Good quality Cotton is being reported by Farmers. However, the production is expected to be low due to deficient rainfall. With about 200 kg/ha fall in productivity as compared to 2014 season, SOPA estimates low Soybean production in the district.  No rainfall is expected during next seven days.
