Low Productivity, Price Fall Increased Basmati Rice Farmers’ Plight

Poor market response to Basmati Rice variety 1509 is also a reason behind the Farmers’ agitation in Punjab and Haryana.  It is noteworthy that price for this variety has fallen sharply and untimely rain has damaged standing crop in many places in Punjab and Haryana (www.weatherindia.net/ weatherReport_23sep.jsp). According to traders, lack of market analysis and adequate advisory to farmers by State and Central Governments has resulted into the plight of the farmers.

We at WeatherSys monitor crop growth vis-à-vis the actual weather and weather forecast on day to day basis. In this report, we have collected ground information on status of Basmati Rice in major growing districts of Punjab and Haryana.

In Patiala, harvesting of 1121 variety would start in a week or so. The crop is healthy and no effect of pattalbeth is visible. Most of the farmers are planning to sow wheat in Rabi Season.  No rainfall during last 20 days has been beneficial for the Rice crop. WeatherSys predicts no rainfall during next seven days.
