Delayed Mustard Sowing in Punjab
In
Punjab, Mustard is mostly cultivated as inter-crop with wheat, barley, gram,
potato, etc. and besides oilseed, its plants are also used as leafy vegetables.
During 2014-15, about 30 thousand ha area was under Mustard cultivation in
Punjab (SEA, 2015). For normal mustard
sowing mid-October to mid-November is considered ideal sowing time in the state
while November-end for late sowing. Presently, mean surface temperature is
ranging between 26oC to 30oC which is suitable for sowing.

of the crop and associated weather in major growing districts. In this report, we have collected ground
information of Mustard sowing status in several districts of Punjab.
In Amritsar, Mustard sowing is likely to
start from November as farmers are harvesting Basmati Rice 1121 variety. Although
there has been no rainfall from last 15 days and soil moisture is less than
required, temperature is suitable for sowing of Mustard. As per meteogram, no
rainfall is expected in the district during next seven days.
In Faridkot, farmers have started sowing
of Mustard from mid-October. Varieties of black mustard like Hyola-401, 407 are
popular among farmers. Maximum temperature in the district is ranging between
28oC to 31oC. As per meteogram no rainfall is likely to
be occur over the district during next seven days and weather is expected to be
warm and dry.
In Ferozpur, sowing of
Mustard is expected to commence from second week of November. Black mustard
varieties like Hyola-401, 407 are being preferred by farmers. WeatherSys predicts warm and dry weather
during next seven days with no rainfall.

suitable for sowing as temperature are ranging between 29oC to 31oC.
