Deficient Rainfall induced Low Productivity of Soybean in Maharashtra

Soybean harvesting has started in most of the districts in Maharashtra. According to SOPA, total area under soybean cultivation in Maharashtra is about 35.85 lakh ha, which is about 1.89 lakh ha less than Govt. of Maharashtra’s figure of 37.74 lakh ha.  According to Govt., total Soybean acreage reached to 125.8 percent of targeted area of 30 lakh ha.  At the same time, SOPA estimates about 27.83 lakh MT production in the state which is 3.83 lakh MT higher than previous season’s revised estimate of 24 lakh MT. This is noteworthy that lack of rain during critical growth stages has restricted the hope of bumper crop.

We at WeatherSys monitor crop growth vis-à-vis the actual weather and weather forecast on day to day basis. We also gather ground information on the status of the crop and associated weather in major growing districts.  In this report, we have collected ground information of Soybean crop status in several districts of Maharashtra.

In Amravati, Soybean harvesting has started. According to farmers production is low due to diseases and less rainfall and they are expecting 600 to 1200 kg/ha.  However, SOPA has estimated 3.62 lakh MT production from total acreage of 3.43 lakh ha with the highest yield of 1055 kg/ha in the state.  There has been no rainfall from last 10 days. No rainfall is expected during next seven days and weather is likely to be hot and dry.
