Chickpea Sowing Begins in Rajasthan

Rajasthan is among top four Chickpea (Chana) growing states.  During this Rabi Season, about 14.5 lakh ha area is targeted by the State Government under Chickpea cultivation of which about 3 to 4 % has been achieved till 26th October.  In 2014-15 Season, Chickpea acreage in the state was 12.56 lakh ha. WeatherSys predicts day temperatures in the state to be between 30oC to 36oC during next seven to ten days while soil moisture is lacking. We at WeatherSys monitor crop growth vis-à-vis the actual weather and weather forecast on day to day basis. We also gather ground information on the status of the crop and associated weather in major growing districts.  In this report, we have collected ground information of Chickpea sowing status in several districts of Rajasthan. 

In Bikaner, farmers have started Chickpea sowing from third week of October. Farmers are mostly growing Rajseed, Gangaur (GNG1581) varieties of Desi Chickpea. There has been no rainfall from last 10 days and no rainfall is expected during next seven days. However, weather is likely to be pleasant with mostly clear sky. 

In Jhunjhunun, Chickpea sowing has started from third week of October.  Mostly, SML 668 and 662 varieties are popular among farmers.  Day temperature in the district are ranging from 26 to 32oC.  There has been no rainfall from last 10 days. The meteogram suggests no rainfall during next seven days. 

In Nagaur, Chickpea sowing has started from third week of October. Gangaur (GNG1581) is among popular varieties of Chickpea among famers of the district.  Presently, day temperature in the district are around 30oC and will remain same during next seven to ten days. There has been no rainfall from last 10 days.  WeatherSys predicts no rainfall during next seven days. 

In Sikar, sowing of chickpea is expected to commence from mid-November. Farmers mostly grow Desi varieties of Chickpea. Day temperature in the district is ranging from 26 to 31oC. There has been no rainfall from last 10 days.  The meteogram suggests no rainfall during next seven days and weather is likely to be cool and dry. 

In Ganganagar, farmers are planning to start Chickpea sowing from second week of November. Temperature is gradually becoming suitable for germination. Light rainfall recently brought down the temperature and significantly increased soil moisture.  As per meteogram, no rainfall is expected during next seven days. 

In Chittaurgarh, Chickpea sowing is likely to begin from November-beginning.  Farmers of the district mostly prefer Desi varieties. Temperature in the district dropped to 26oC.  However, soil moisture is less than what is ideally required. In Churu, Chickpea sowing is expected to commence from second week of November. Mostly, farmers grow desi varieties of Chickpea.  Slowly, temperature is coming down in the district as there was light rainfall yesterday. During next seven days, no rainfall is expected and weather is likely to be cool and dry days with clear sky.
