Castor in Gujarat : Status Update

Gujarat is the top Castor producing state.  During this year Castor has been sown in about 7.81 lakh ha area in Gujarat which is marginally higher than last year’s acreage of 7.34 lakh ha.  We at WeatherSys monitor crop growth vis-à-vis the actual weather and weather forecast on day to day basis.  In this report, we have collected ground information of Castor crop status in major growing districts of Gujarat. 

In Ahmedabad, Castor acreage is around 0.59 lakh ha. The crop is in flowering stage and is in good health due to occasional irrigation. There has been no rainfall from last 10 days. The meteogram generated through metGIS_Agro® predicts no rainfall during next seven days and weather is likely to be hot and dry with clear sky.  

In Kutch, Castor has been sown in 1.19 lakh ha. Flowering has started in the crop and is in good health.  Farmers are irrigating their crop at a regular intervals.  There has been no rainfall from last 10 days. No rainfall is likely over the district and weather is expected to hot and dry during next seven days, predicts meteogram.  

In Jamnagar, total Castor acreage is about 0.09 lakh ha.  Flowering in the crop is expected to start within 20 days. Deficient rainfall has restricted the ideal growth of the crop. There has been no rainfall from last 10 days. The meteogram generated by using metGIS_Agro® suggested no rainfall during next week and weather is likely to be hot and dry with clear sky.

In Vadodara, Castor has been sown in 0.30 lakh ha and presently the crop is in flowering stage.  Farmers are applying insecticides once in a while to avoid any pest infestation. At the same time, govt. is suppling canal water for irrigation at many places. This kind of activities will boost the productivity and production in the district. WeatherSys predicts no rainfall during next seven days and weather is likely to be hot and dry.
