Tomato from Mysore Area Likely to Keep Prices under Check in Delhi NCR

Karnataka have highest average productivity of tomato 33.9 mt/ha in 2013-14 (NHB, 2015).  Being a perishable vegetable, weather parameters such as Temperature, RH plays major role in tomato’s longevity even after harvest.

We at WeatherSys monitor weather in continuous basis. Weather parameters have been favorable for a good crop of tomato. May 2015 onward, it could be seen that max temperature have been close to 30oC ideal for good productivity and color.

We have analyzed rainfall pattern with maximum temperature during last three years and its impact on Tomato crop in Mysore. During second week of June to mid-July this year, Mysore had received less rainfall as compared to corresponding period in 2014 and 2013.  However, during mid-August 2015, Mysore received higher rainfall than corresponding period of previous two years (Fig 1).

Keeping in mind present weather scenario and arrivals status in Bangalore, we are expecting total production in Karnataka especially in Mysore to be same if not more over previous years.  However, the harvesting period of tomato would be longer which will keep the arrival higher in nearby Mandis for some time.  Prices are expected to remain weak to stable.
