Prolonged Dry Spell to Hit Cotton Crop in Saurashtra

Despite rainfed cultivation, especially in Saurashtra region, Gujarat has ranked top in the Cotton producing states in 2014-15.  This Monsoon season, Saurashtra region received normal rainfall.  However, due to long dry spell of more than 15 days and less irrigation facilities, incidences of wilting and drying of the crop have been increased in the region. We, at WeatherSys, have gathered ground information of cotton crop in several districts of the state.

In Amreli, there has been no significant rainfall from last one month. The ground water level has also dropped.  Mostly Sankar 6 and Shankar 8 varieties of the cotton were sown in the district. The crop is about two months old now and is in flowering stage.  But, whiteflies in cotton are affecting the crop. Farmers are spaying Phorate insecticide, but it is not proving sufficient to control this menace.  However, as per farmers, a good rainfall can wash away these insecticides. As per meteogram, no rainfall is expected during the week except moderate rainfall on 11th Sept.

In Junagarh, there has been no rainfall from last 20 days.  Farmers are using their own irrigation sources.  Flowering in the crop started and its harvesting is expected to commence in November.  As per the meteogram generated through metGIS_Agro®, weather is likely to be dry with clear sky during next seven days.

In Vadodara, there has been no rainfall from last 15 days. Flowering in cotton crop variety Volgar vt-2 has started. Spider mites attack have been reported in the crop. Farmers are applying Phyromax and Monocrotophos insecticides to control the insect infestation.  No rainfall is expected in the district during next seven days.

In Rajkot, there has been no rainfall from last 20 days. Whiteflies attack on flowering crop has been reported in the district. Insecticide application is not proving sufficient to control these troublemaking insect.  There is a dire need of good rainfall as this will not only help crop growth but reduce whiteflies menace also.  Moderate rainfall is expected on 11th September and no rainfall in subsequent four days.

In Bhavnagar, there has been no significant rainfall from last more than a month. The cotton varieties like Sankar 6 and Sankar 8 are prominently sown in the district. Due to water stress, crop is drying and even flowering has not started in several talukas of the district. Farmers who have tubewell and well are applying irrigation. But, large number of farmers depend on the vagaries of nature. As per meteogram, no significant rainfall is expected during next seven days.
