Low Acreage of Castor in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana

Castor seed production is likely to be low during 2015-16 due to lower acreage in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.  Till week ending 23rd September, total acreage of Castor in Andhra Pradesh was about 45.56 thousand ha which is about 53 percent of normal acreage. Presently, it is matching previous year’s acreage of about 46 thousand ha.  In Telangana, Castor has been sown in about 40.50 thousand ha area about 48 percent of normal acreage whereas total acreage during 2014-15 was 64.91 thousand ha (DOA, AP and Telangana).

We also gather ground information on the status of the crop and associated weather in major growing districts.  In this report, we have collected ground information of Castor crop status in several districts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states. 

Kurnool is the biggest Castor growing district in Andhra Pradesh. Presently, total acreage of Castor is about 31.63 thousand ha which is about 51 percent of normal seasonal acreage. In the district, sowing of Castor had started in the month of July which is currently at flowering stage.  Mostly hybrid varieties have been preferred by farmers. The district received about 28 percent deficient rainfall during this monsoon season.  As per meteogram, light to moderate rainfall is likely over the district during next seven days. 

In Guntur, castor sowing had started in the month of July. Till week ending 23rd September total sowing in the district has been done in 1.07 thousand ha.  Mostly GCH-4, Kranti-PCS4 varieties have been sown. Accumulated rainfall of about 501 mm has been received in the district during this Monsoon season which is normal. Presently, the crop is at flowering stage. There was moderate rainfall on 25th and 26th September and same is expected during next seven days.

Mahbubnagar is the top Castor growing district in Telangana where normal acreage of this crop is about 72.83 thousand ha. Till 23rd September, total Castor sowing in the district was done in about 39.67 thousand ha area which is about 54 percent of normal acreage. Sowing had started in mid-June and farmers used Hybrid varieties like GCH-4, GCH-2, CGH-Kranti, PCH etc. Flowering has started in the crop. WeatherSys predicts light to moderate rainfall is likely over the district during next seven days.  

In Karimnagar district of Telangana, Castor sowing had started in the month of June which is at flowering stage now. Total acreage of castor is about 66 ha till week ending on 23rd September.  The district has received about 650 mm rainfall which is 16 percent less than normal but does not fall under deficit category.  Light to moderate rainfall is expected during next seven days in the district.
