Kharif Maize in Bihar: Low Production Expected

Maize cultivation in both Kharif and Rabi seasons alongwith its fertile soil makes Bihar one of the major Maize producing state in India.  During 2013-14, total area under maize was estimated 0.75 m ha in Bihar (GOI). Bihar has received 72 percent of normal rainfall during this Monsoon Season. This rainfall deficiency had imposed risk on Kharif maize production especially in rainfed areas. Recent rainfall would not prove beneficial for the crop as most of the farmers have already started harvesting.

We at WeatherSys monitor crop growth vis-à-vis the actual weather and weather forecast on day to day basis. We also gather ground information on the status of the crop and associated weather in major growing districts.  In this report, we have collected ground information of Maize crop status in several districts in Bihar.

In Samastipur, farmers are harvesting their maize crop. Mostly high yielding hybrid varieties have been preferred by the farmers. But, lower yield is expected this year due to water deficiency and early maturity in Kharif season.  Maize grain price is about Rs. 1500/qntl in nearby mandies. There has been no significant rainfall from August-end to mid-September. The district has received moderate rainfall during last 48 hours.  Light rainfall is likely over the district during next two days.

In Bhagalpur, maize harvesting has commenced 15 days ago.  Farmers are expecting lower production as compared to previous Kharif season. The district has witnessed 20 days dry period during August-end to mid-September. There was moderate rainfall during last two days which would prove beneficial for crop in some places where late sowing was done. As per meteogram generated by using metGIS_Agro®, light to moderate rainfall is expected during next two days. Weather is likely to be hot and dry with clear sky on subsequent five days.
