Huge Damage to Cotton Crop in Punjab
We at WeatherSys monitor
Cotton crop growth vis-à-vis the actual weather and weather forecast on day to
day basis. We also gather ground information on the status of the crop and
associated weather in major growing districts.
White fly attacked the cotton
crop in Punjab and farmers’ efforts to control this menace was discussed in our
previous report of 27th August 2015 (www.weatherindia.net/weatherReport_27aug.jsp).
Presently, the standing cotton crop has
been damaged in large area of cotton growing belt of Punjab. However, Govt. of
Punjab has announced that farmers would be duly compensated for the substantial
loss incurred by them due to whitefly attack (ET).
In this report, we have collected the ground information of Cotton crop
status from several districts in Punjab.
In Muktsar, a large number of farmers have uprooted their crop due to
whiteflies. At the same time, many farmers are expecting low yield due to
whiteflies menace. In this case,
spurious insecticides have also been found as one of the culprits as these were
ineffective on the pest. There is no
need of rainfall now as farmers are harvesting their crop. WeatherSys predicts moderate rainfall during
next week.
Meteogram
produced by metGIS_Agro® showing actual weather data for last 10
days and forecast for next 7 days including soil temperature and ET. Rainfall
for last 120 days is also available if clicked with specific crop.
Whiteflies have spoiled cotton
crop in large areas of Bhatinda,
Faridkot and Ferozpur districts. Many farmers have suffered losses and forced
to uproot their crops. Only few farmers
were able to save their crop. There has been no rainfall from last 20 days in
the region. It was felt that timely rain
could have saved the crop to some extent.
Moderate rainfall is predicted during next week in these districts. But
it will not prove beneficial for the crop as farmers have started harvesting
their remaining crop.
