Whiteflies Spoiling Cotton Crop in Punjab

Cotton is a major cash crop in South Western districts of Punjab.  The total cotton acreage is about 4.50 lakh ha during this kharif season missing the targeted acreage of 5.25 lakh ha. With the increase of Rs. 50/qntl from previous season, the MSP for cotton for kharif 2015-16 set by GOI is Rs. 3800/qntl for medium staple and Rs. 4100/qntl for long staple. It has been noticed that low return last year from the cotton crop and insufficient MSP for the crop this year has resulted into not achieving the targeted acreage. This Monsoon season Punjab has been a rainfall deficit state by 31 percent till now.

We at WeatherSys have gathered the status of crop and associated weather in Bhatinda, Faridkot, Mansa and Muktsar districts of Punjab. Whiteflies attack has been observed on the crop on all these districts. Cotton farmers are fearing of great yield loss this kharif season.

In Bhatinda, Whitefly attack has been noticed which is spoiling the crop. Farmers are worried as application of insecticides seems ineffective on the pest. An effective advisory to control the pest will be helpful for farmers.  There has been no rainfall in last 10 days in the district and according to meteogram produced by metGIS_Agro®, no rainfall is likely during next seven days.

In Faridkot, Whiteflies are sucking the sap and extracting honey dew from plant which is adversely affecting the plant growth. Farmers are applying insecticide Syngenta Polo (Diafenthiuron) provided by the government authorities. This effort of farmers is not proving sufficient to control the pest. There has been no rainfall in last 10 days in the district and according to meteogram, no rainfall is likely during next seven days.

In Mansa, the cotton crop has been adversely affected by Whitefly attack.  Application of insecticide seems ineffective on the pest.  Farmers are worried for total crop loss.  The scanty rainfall and high temperature intensify the severity of the pest. There has been no rainfall in last 10 days in the district and during next seven days weather is likely to be hot and humid with clear sky.

In Muktsar, farmers are applying insecticides such as Syngenta-Polo, UPL-Ulala, Ambika-Pride to control Whiteflies but no effect on the pest has been observed. Humid weather is being blamed for such worst Whiteflies attack.  There has been no rainfall in last 10 days and weather is likely to be mainly hot and humid with clear sky.
