Status of Castor in Gujarat
In India, Castor has about 95 percent share in export of
Oils/fats. During 2012-13, about 5.66
lakh tonnes of castor oil/fats was exported which was valued at about Rs.
4314.78 crores. Though castor is not
covered under MSP, it became second largest export earner among oilseeds after
Soybean.

ground information of the Castor crop and associated weather in Gujarat.
The
Monsoon rainfall in Rajkot this year
has been mostly as per the requirement of the Castor crop. As per DOA, Gujarat, Castor has been sown in
about 8,300 ha in the district. The height of the crop is about 30 inches. Some
insects like Semilooper and Solospera have been noticed in the crop. Farmers
are using insecticide Penalpost. There has been no rainfall in the district
during last 10 days and according to meteogram, weather is likely to be mainly
humid with clear sky during next seven days.

In Banaskantha, heavy rainfall during last two weeks of July resulted
into water-logging in the fields for which Castor crop is highly susceptible.
Thus, sowing of Castor commenced in beginning of August. As per DOA, Gujarat, castor has been sown in
about 46,300 ha in the district till 24th August. Unfortunately,
there has been no significant rainfall after sowing of the crop. Presently, the crop is in good state and no
insect or disease has been noticed though irrigation is required to keep the
crop healthy. Weather during next seven days in this area is expected to be
warm and humid with clear sky.

Sowing of castor in Ahmedabad also started in the beginning of August. As per DOA,
Gujarat, castor has been sown in about 45,200 ha in the district till 24th
August. Presently, there has been no complaint of insect or disease in the
crop. There is requirement of more
rainfall for good crop growth. Weather is likely to be dry throughout the next
seven days.
