Paddy Crop in Haryana and Punjab Unaffected by Deficient Rainfall

Punjab and Haryana are considered as food bowl of India. Rice is one of the major crop of these two states, especially Basmati Rice. In 2014 Kharif Season, paddy crop was cultivated in about 28.94 lakh ha and 9.74 lakh ha area in Punjab and Haryana respectively. For rice in this Kharif season, 26.55 lakh ha area is targeted in Punjab which is about 8 percent less than previous year whereas with about 23 percent increase, 12 lakh ha area is targeted in Haryana.

The monsoon rainfall has been deficient by 30 percent in Punjab and 22 percent in Haryana till date.  WeatherSys has collected the ground information about the status of the rice crop in Amritsar and Patiala in Punjab and Sirsa and Kurukshetra in Haryana.

In Amritsar, no significant rainfall has been experienced after June 25th. The height of the rice crop is about 30 inches, thanks for irrigation facility available in the state.  In some parts of the district, leaf eating ‘pattal beth’ have been noticed and farmers using Kantos insecticide to control it. It is expected that rainfall in near future can harm the crop. As per the meteogram, no significant rainfall is likely over the district during next 7 days.

In Patiala, significant rainfall received on regular intervals resulted into healthy Basmati Rice crop which is about 24 inches high.  As per GDD analysis for the crop at WeatherSys, the crop is in flowering stage.  ‘Pattal beth’ insect has been noticed in some areas of the district and farmers will spray insecticide like Pradhan in few days.  No significant rainfall is expected in next 7 days.

In Sirsa, light to moderate rainfall has been experienced on regular intervals.  Basmati rice crop is in good health and about 24 to 30 inches high. Flowering will start within next 15 to 20 days in late transplanted crop. As per meteogram, weather is likely to be dry during next 7 days.

Kurukshetra has also received light to moderate rainfall on regular intervals this monsoon season. Currently, rice crop is healthy.  Basmati rice variety 1509 crop is about 30 to 36 inches high.  Flowering has started in early transplanted crop.  Farmers are not applying pesticides as recent rainfall on 14-15 August has reduced the possibility of insect attack on the crop.  As per meteogram, no significant rainfall is expected during next 7 days.
