Rain Deficiency to Hit Groundnut Production in Gujarat

Gujarat has not received significant rainfall during last fortnight and same trend is expected in the coming week as well. Groundwater level has also dropped in many districts which is affecting another alternative irrigation source. Though, as of now, the crop is healthy in most of the districts. But, during peg formation and grain filling stages in the Groundnut, when 4 to 6 important irrigations at 10 days interval required for optimal yield, long dry spell will resulted into low production. WeatherSys has gathered ground information of the crop and associated weather from below mentioned districts.

In Amreli, groundnut crop is about 18 inches high and is in pod formation stage. Mostly GG-20 variety was chosen by farmers.  There has been no significant rainfall in the district in last more than 25 days.  Dropping of groundwater level is making borewells non-functional at many areas in the district. There is urgent requirement of good rainfall for crop growth at this stage.  As per WeatherSys crop-weather monitoring tool, the actual rainfall is much lower than ideal rainfall for the crop at this stage.  No rainfall is likely during next seven days, forecasts metGIS_Agro®.

In Bhavnagar, the crop is about 2 months old and pod formation has started. The crop is healthy and no insect or disease has been noticed as of now. There has been moderate rainfall on 24th August but more rainfall is required for crop growth during this stage. The groundwater level is also low. No rainfall is likely during next seven days in the district.

In Rajkot, there has been no rainfall from last 10 days. However, more than 2 months old Groundnut crop is in good condition and is in pod formation stage. Farmers are using other means of irrigation sources such as wells and borewells. No insect or disease has been noticed till now.  The meteogram generated through metGIS suggests hot and humid weather with clear sky during next seven days.

In Jamnagar, there has been no significant rainfall from 13th August. Farmers are using their own irrigation sources. The crop is in pod formation stage and required irrigation on regular interval. Farmers are using insecticides for Munda insect in some places where manure has been used in the fields. During next seven days weather is likely to be hot and humid with clear sky.
