Deficient Monsoon Rainfall in Bihar Cause of Worry for Rice Growers
This monsoon season, Bihar has
received about 32 percent less rainfall as compared to normal rainfall till
date. Despite rice being low productivity crop in Bihar, it is one of the major
crops in the state. About 40 percent of
rice growing area have irrigation facility. Still, a large area of the crop remains
rainfed. WeatherSys collected ground
information of this crop and weather status.
Katihar in eastern part of the state is one of the low productivity districts
having about 1316 kg/ha yield for rice crop.
Presently, the district has not witnessed any significant rainfall
during last 10 days. The crop is about 3 feet now and grain formation has
started. As per the meteogram, moderate
rainfall is likely over the district during next seven days. This rain will
certainly help the crop.
Vaishali is also under the low productivity area of the paddy crop having about
1347 kg/ha yield. The district has not received any significant rainfall during
last 15 days. There is a good rainfall
today and according to farmers this is the first good rainfall of this monsoon
season. Due to deficient rainfall, farmers
started transplanting from 1st August. Farmers have preferred local and hybrid 644
varieties of the rice crop. As per the
meteogram, moderate rainfall is likely over the district during next seven
days.
West Champaran is under medium low productivity area of rice in Bihar having about
1863 kg/ha yield. Presently the rice
crop is two months old. The varieties
sown are 5204, 1001, 1010, 7029 and Pusa Basmati. The district has witnessed light to moderate
rainfall till now which is not sufficient for the rice crop. However, in next seven days moderate to heavy
rainfall is expected.
